Shayani (Devshayani) Ekadashi 2026: The Sacred Beginning of Chaturmas

Shayani (Devshayani) Ekadashi 2026: The Sacred Beginning of Chaturmas

Shayani Ekadashi, also known as Devshayani Ekadashi, or Ashadhi Ekadashi, is one of the most significant Ekadashis observed by Vaishnavas. Falling on the Shukla Paksha Ekadashi of the month of Ashadha, this auspicious day marks the beginning of Chaturmas, the four sacred months dedicated to deepening one's spiritual life through increased devotion, austerity, and remembrance of Lord Vishnu.

According to the Vedic scriptures, Lord Vishnu enters His divine Yoga Nidra (transcendental rest) on this day and awakens on Prabodhini Ekadashi in the month of Kartik. This period inspires devotees to become more focused in their devotional practices. Observing Shayani Ekadashi with sincerity is said to bestow immense spiritual benefits and bring one closer to the lotus feet of the Supreme Lord.

Why is Shayani (Ashadhi) Ekadashi Celebrated?

The glories of Shayani Ekadashi are described in the Bhavishya Uttara Purana, where Lord Krishna explains its significance to Maharaj Yudhishthira. This Ekadashi is also known as Padma Ekadashi and is glorified as a day that removes sinful reactions, fulfills spiritual desires, and helps devotees progress on the path of bhakti.

One of the most important aspects of this Ekadashi is that it marks the beginning of Chaturmas. Throughout these four months, devotees voluntarily adopt spiritual vows, increase their chanting, hear sacred scriptures, and engage more deeply in devotional service. During the first month of Chaturmas, devotees avoid green leafy vegetables as part of their observance. Rather than viewing Chaturmas merely as a period of restrictions, Vaishnavas embrace it as a wonderful opportunity to strengthen their relationship with Lord Krishna.

The Story Behind Shayani Ekadashi

The Bhavishya Uttara Purana narrates the story of the righteous King Mandhata, whose abundant kingdom suffered a severe drought for several years. Distressed by the suffering of his citizens, the king approached the great sage Angira Muni for guidance.

The sage advised the king and his people to faithfully observe this Ekadashi. With full faith, the entire kingdom observed the sacred fast and worshipped Lord Hari. By the Lord's mercy, the rains returned, and the kingdom became prosperous once again.

The Glorious Pandharpur Wari

Shayani (Ashadhi) Ekadashi is widely known for the sacred Pandharpur Wari in Maharashtra, one of India's most revered traditions of bhakti. Every year, lakhs of Warkaris undertake a pilgrimage to Pandharpur to seek the darshan of Lord Vitthal, walking together in devotional groups while singing abhangas and chanting the holy names of the Lord. Inspired by great saints, the Wari continues to embody unwavering devotion and the timeless spirit of bhakti.
